The airbag system includes a sensor system (2,3,7,8,9) for detecting acceleration data and consisting of at least two uni-axial acceleration sensors which are mounted spaced from the central air bag control unit (4). The acceleration sensors can be integrated into the level of the A pillar, B pillar or sill. An additional acceleration sensor can be mounted centrally on the end wall spaced from the deformation zone of the vehicle.
