The vehicle door hinge has two brackets connected by a hinge pin (4) which is fitted with a mechanical switch unit (16) designed so that it changes its radial position relative to the pin following the start of the swivel movement of the door whereby the locking unit (5) which is engaging with the locking element (10) then moves out of engagement. The switch unit can have a switch arm (17) rotationally secured on the hinge pin and mechanically coupled to a switch housing (15) mounted rotatable and radially displaceable on the pin so that rotational movement of the pin causes the switch housing (15) to move radially towards the pin.
