Smoke is directed through a water bath under a vacuum, and the cleaned and cooled smoke collected in a container. The smoke collecting container stands in a fluid filled basin which is open at the top. A vacuum is created through an opening in the base if the smoke collecting container is lifted from the basin. Alternatively, devices such as pistons, bellows or pumps can be used to create the vacuum.
