PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a select assist device for an automatic transmission enabling range change over operation at a time of failure by a mechanical connection of a select lever and a select position change over device, expanding degree of freedom in layout by miniaturization of the select lever, and providing select lever operating force characteristics satisfying demand. SOLUTION: A controller 3 is provided with an operating force estimation part 35 estimating input operation force to the select lever 11 based on difference between operation position from a position sensor 61 and actual operating position from a position sensor 62 and a start determination part 36 performing start determination of an assist actuator 2 from estimated input operating force.
