PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine with a variable compression ratio mechanism, more quickly obtaining proper valve timing. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine includes the variable compression ratio mechanism for varying the compression ratio. This internal combustion engine includes: a valve timing varying device for varying the valve timing of at least one driving valve, an intake valve or an exhaust valve; a valve timing control device for feedback controlling the valve timing varying device so that the actual valve timing is converged to the target valve timing based on the operating state of the internal combustion engine; and a feedback gain correction means for changing the feedback gain in the feedback control of the valve timing changing device relative to the feedback gain when the compression ratio is not changed when the compression ratio is changed by the variable compression ratio mechanism.
