PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inverting latch mechanism which prevents the inadvertent opening of a door and which enhances safety. SOLUTION: An engaging recess 14 is formed in a surface, facing a dead bolt 13, of a latch block 2; a rack 15 is formed on the side, facing the latch block, of the dead bolt 13; a pinion or a sector gear 16, which meshes with the rack 15, is rotatably arranged near the rack 15; and a driving pin 17 is protrusively provided on one surface of the pinion or the sector gear 16. A vertically elongated lock bar 19, which engages an engaging part 18, formed at one end, with the driving pin 17, is guided in a vertically movable manner to a position to be aligned with the engaging recess 14. In locking which makes the dead bolt 13 protruded from a front plate 6 of a lock case, the other end of the lock bar 19 is engaged into the engaging recess 14 of the latch block.
