<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical functional element which operates with low power consumption and with which wavelength conversion and waveform shaping are carried out in the state of light with a compact and small construction, and a method for manufacturing the same. <P>SOLUTION: A directional coupler is constructed with two line defect optical waveguides 1 and 2 and a saturable absorption region 6. Also signal light 3 is made incident on one out of the line defect optical waveguides 1 and 2, and control light 4 is made incident on the other out of the two. Intensity of the control light 4 is at the level of not saturating the saturable absorption region 6. With this arrangement, turning on/off of the directional coupler is carried out according to whether intensity of the signal light 3 is a value to saturate the saturable absorption region 6 or not, and as a result, the wavelength conversion and the waveform shaping of the signal light 3 are carried out in the state of light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
