PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To variably control the size of a packet used in a storage device in accordance with a communication environment outside the storage device. SOLUTION: A storage device 2 is provided with a CHA 3 which controls data transfer between a host 1 and a DKA 5 which controls data transfer between a disk drive 6. A host I/F distinction part 3B1 of the CHA 3 distinguishes kinds and communication zones of communication protocols which the host 1 uses. A packet size setting part 3B2 sets an optimal packet size based on the distinguished kinds of the communication protocols or the like. In similar, the DKA5 sets an optimal packet size based on the kind and data processing speed of a disk drive 6 to be used. By this, data can quickly be transferred to a packet between the host and a cache memory and between the disk drive and the cache memory to improve efficiency in data transmission.
