A method for operating a spinning machine (1) (especially an open-end machine) in which necessary maintenance operations are carried out during batch change-over, involves organising the maintenance operations into several working steps divided up between manual and mechanical steps and then performing the mechanical step(s) with a maintenance facility (5). An independent claim is also included for a spinning machine (1) as above with several working positions (3) and at least one maintenance facility (5) connected to a control unit (7), in which the facility (5) has handling (15, 19) or metering devices (20) and there is a programme for performing the above method in the control unit or in an associated memory device.
