PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a range image sensor improved in measuring reliability by obtaining high SN ratio while inhibiting the saturation of photodetection element. SOLUTION: The light source 2 radiates the light modulated with a modulation signal of prescribed period to the objective space, the photodetection element 1 takes images of the objective space, and the image formation part 4 obtains the range to the object Ob from the phase difference of the modulation signal between the light radiated from the light source 2 to the objective space and the light reflected by the object Ob in the objective space and received by the photodetection element 1. The photodetection element 1 is controlled by a control circuit part 3 with the timing of the charge transmission so as to impart charges accumulated for every detection interval of different length of intervals to the image formation part 4. The image formation part 4 selects the longest detection interval so that the amount of the accumulated charges within each detection interval is less than the allowable charge amount of the photodetection element 1, and determines the range using the charges accumulated during the detection interval.
