The invention is related to a device, method and image processing apparatus for creating an output image on basis of an input image by means of interpolation of pixel values of the input image. The invention proposes an edge dependent interpolation scheme in which match errors for sets of pixels in different neighbourhoods in respective orientation of a particular pixel to be interpolated (10) are first computed. Comparison of subsets(400, 410, 420) of pixel values are used in a function for computation of match errors. A match error and corresponding orientation are selected and the pixels in the selected orientation are used in the interpolation of a particular pixel.
