PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical sensor (illuminance sensor) that produces a linear output with a high precision in a range from low illumination (a few lux) to high illumination (tens of thousands of lux) by providing multiple low and high illumination sensors independently and switching them appropriately, and to provide a mobile phone with this illuminance sensor. SOLUTION: This semiconductor optical sensor comprises multiple photo diodes 1A and 2B with different illuminance-output characteristics, a switch 8 that selects any of multiple photo diodes, an amplifier 9 connected to the output of the photo diode selected by the switch and an output section (OUT) connecting to the amplifier 9. Switching takes place among multiple photo diodes with different illuminance-output characteristics, depending on the illuminance of irradiation by the photo diode. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
