PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electrode discharge lamp without thermal distortion of ends of a glass vessel covered with an external electrode. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp comprises a tubular glass vessel 2 with a phosphor layer 5 on its inner wall 4, enclosing gas including at least mercury in the inside space 6, and external electrodes 3 formed on both ends in the longer direction of the glass vessel to cover the outer surfaces and end surfaces of the both ends.
