PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering device for a vehicle embodied on the steer-by-wire system capable of simply and properly sensing a failure in a contact breaker to connect mechanically a steering wheel with vehicle wheels in steering selectively. SOLUTION: The steering device of the vehicle embodied on the steer-by-wire system is equipped with electromagnetic clutches 32 and 33 and a cable (intermediate member) 31 between a steering input shaft 12 connected with the steering wheel 11 and a steering output shaft 24 coupled mechanically with a left FW1 and a right front wheel FW2 so that the steering wheel 11 is coupled mechanically with the left FW1 and right front wheels FW2 when an electric motor 22 for steering is in failure. An inspection ECU 46 makes a drive control of the motor 22 by changing the combination of the engaged condition and disengaged condition of the clutches 32 and 33 in condition that the rotation of an electric motor 13 for the steering reaction force is prohibited and senses a failure of the clutches 32 and 33 as their being disengaged and engaged erroneously by sensing the rotation of the steering motor 22.
