PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder and image reading apparatus comprising the feeder in which a superior image is obtained by effectively preventing character shakes, in simple configuration, in reading the image of a document. SOLUTION: In the automatic document feeder, a reading guide 47 is disposed while facing a document reading plane 37a of contact glass 37, and a feeding guide 48 is disposed while facing the reading guide 47 on the downstream side of the document reading plane 37a in a document feeding direction. Furthermore, a projection 49 is provided in a portion 47a, of the reading guide 47, which faces the feeding guide 48, on the downstream side of the document reading plane 37a in the document feeding direction. Hence even if a document 34 gets away from a nip N1 of a feeding roller 45 before reading, the document 34 is fed while abutting on the projection 49, so that a change of a document feeding path is prevented, and occurrence of character shakes is avoided as a result.
