<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-quality liquid crystal optical device comprising a liquid crystal element. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical device has a light source emitting light with a wavelength of 550 nm or less, a homeotropic alignment liquid crystal element placed on the optical path of the light emitted from the light source, and is equipped with: a first substrate; a first transparent electrode formed on one surface of the first substrate; a first alignment layer which is formed on the one surface of the first substrate so as to cover the first transparent electrode and where a pretilt angle of >80° and ≤89.5° is given; a second substrate placed nearly in parallel to the first substrate; a second transparent electrode formed on the surface of the second substrate opposite to the first substrate; a second alignment layer which is formed on the surface of the second substrate opposite to the first substrate so as to cover the second transparent electrode and where a pretilt angle of >80° and ≤89.5° is given; and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first and second substrates, and an objective lens on which light emitted from the liquid crystal element is made incident. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
