PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase a regeneration output and achieve linear magnetic response for a signal magnetic field, in a CPP-GMR element having thick film. SOLUTION: A thin film magnetic head is the CPP-GMR element where the total film thickness of a pinned layer 7, a nonmagnetic intermediate layer 8, and a free layer 9 is≥10nm. The thin film magnetic head includes an insulating film 11 and a hard magnetic film 12 formed on both side surfaces 19 of a spin bulb film 18. The hard magnetic film 12 extends toward the free layer 9 while permitting a cross section thereof in a plane orthogonal to a layer widthwise direction to decrease as it approaches the spin bulb film 18 in the vicinity of the spin bulb film 18, and effectively constitutes the end of the hard magnetic film 12 in the layer widthwise direction in a plane parallel to a medium opposing surface, and includes a first boundary line 32 facing the free layer 9 in an at least one part thereof.
