PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader for acquiring stable image data with a simple configuration through the use of a CMOS image sensor when a reading object to be conveyed is imaged. SOLUTION: The image reader 1 comprises an illumination part 14 for irradiating a conveyed coin 20 with light; the CMOS image sensor 37 and an image forming lens 36 for imaging the coin 20; and a coin arrival sensor 41 for detecting the coin 20 at a coin arrival position 40. When the coin 20 arrives at the coin arrival position 40, the driving timing of the CMOS image sensor is reset. When the coin passes through the coin arrival position 40, the illumination part is turned on. In this case, the operation clock frequency of the CMOS image sensor 37 is controlled so as to output the image data being integer times as large as a one frame portion till the coin 20 passes through the coin arrival position 40 from the arrival at the position.
