PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane treatment device operating method capable of reliably detecting breakage of a membrane and high in production efficiency of filtered water. SOLUTION: A treated water outlet nozzle 12a of a hollow fiber membrane module 1 is connected to a membrane breakage detection device 50 via a treated water pipe 41. A filtering step of feeding only raw water and a membrane cleaning step of feeding raw water and pressurized gas form one cycle, and the cycles are continuously performed. Membrane breakage is detected in the membrane cleaning step once for one to several cycles. When a hollow fiber membrane 4 is broken, pressurized gas from a compressor C passes through a broken part and flows out of a treated water chamber 12, and passes between electrodes 51a, 51b of the membrane breakage detection device 50 via the treated water pipe 41. When bubbles are present in the treated water, the current or the voltage between the electrodes 51a, 51b is changed when the bubbles pass through between the electrodes 51a, 51b.
