In a first phase, the exhaust gas is fed to a regenerator whose thermal stores were pre-warmed, to form clean gas in a combustion chamber (5). The clean gas is drawn through a second regenerator. A third regenerator is flushed with the clean gas and the purge air is fed to the exhaust gas. In two more phases, the gas if passed through the three regenerators. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for carrying out the method.
