Apparatus for horizontally stacking flat articles comprises support members S, S1 which rest on rollers A, A1 and A1, A1<SP>1</SP>. Each pair of rollers A, A1 and A1, A1<SP>1</SP> is mounted on a shaft for common rotation and a chain-sprocket connection K, K1, K2, provides synchronous rotation of the pairs of rollers. Each roller has peripheral flats which are circumferentially displaced relative to the flats of the adjacent roller. A stop C is provided on the supports S, S 1 which are normally urged to the left of Fig. 1 by springs V, V1. The addition of articles at Z to a stack P causes the stack, stop C and the support S to move to the right and the rollers to be rotated by the support S. At the position shown in Fig. 4, the support is about to be lowered since the circumferential portions of the rollers are interrupted at b<SP>1</SP>, b1<SP>1</SP>. The support S is therefore returned to its original position by spring V and support of the stack P and stop C is taken over by the support S1 which is raised on to the circumferential portions of rollers A1, A1<SP>1</SP>. As it is moved to the right by the addition of further articles the support S1 rotates the rollers in a similar manner to support S. There may be two or more pairs of supports, Fig. 6 (not shown), arid the rollers may be profiled to improve the transfer of the stack from one support member to the other, Fig. 8 (not shown). |
