A swivel bending machine includes a control unit operated via an input unit and which is accessible via a computer, where in the input unit a desired shape for the sheet metal plate can be inputted. A bending sequence of a sheet metal item (23) can be computed in the computer unit for an inputted desired bending profile with consideration for the geometry of the components of the swivel bending machine, so that a specifiable permissible bending of the processed sheet metal plate takes place during a collision. An independent claim is included for a method for controlling a swivel bending machine.
