In a liquid-discharging device and a method of controlling the device where liquid drops are discharged from a liquid-discharging nozzle of a liquid-discharging head to an object to which the liquid drops are to be discharged, cleaning effect of the liquid-discharging nozzle is improved and time for a series of performance-maintaining operation is shortened. The device has a platen plate, and the plate supports recording paper, as the object to which the liquid drops are to be discharged, to define a positional relationship between the paper and a print head and receives liquid drops discharged from the print head. The device causes an ink-discharging nozzle to perform preliminary discharge of ink drops to the platen plate.
