Measurement of volume of excavation - in which sharp focus telescope measures cross sectional areas at known distances and area times volume give vol. of successive slices

A method for the determination of the cubic capacity of large volume, especially of a building excavation, in which a telescope of low depth of focus is used to determine the area of the cross section of the volume at a known distance from the observer by comparison with a known area. The measurement is repeated at several different distances and the results are multiplied by the successive increases in distance to obtain the volumes of successive "slices" which are added to give the total volume.
