Coloured polymers are obtained by reacting a polymer containing an epoxy group with an aromatic primary or secondary amine having the general formula R1-NH-R2 in which R1 is an aryl group substituted or unsubstituted in the ortho- or meta-position by alkyl, halogen, NO2, SO3H or alkoxy groups and R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, an aryl or an alkylaryl group substituted or unsubstituted by alkyl, halogen, NO2, SO3H or alkoxy groups, at a temperature in excess of 20 DEG C. and the reaction product is treated with a diazonium salt of the general formula [R3-NN]+X- in which R3 represents an aryl group substituted or unsubstituted by alkyl, halogen, NO2, SO3H or alkoxy groups and X- represents a mineral acid anion, at a temperature between 0 DEG and 20 DEG C. in an aqueous or organic medium, optionally in the presence of a buffer. Suitable polymers containing epoxide groups are obtained by epoxidizing polymers containing double bonds, e.g. poly(vinylcyclohexene) or polyisoprene, or alternatively polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing epoxide groups. |
