PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lignocellulose-pretreating method and an ethanol-producing method in which a sugar solution enabling ethanol fermentation is inexpensively and efficiently obtained by using a lignocellulose-containing raw material such as a waste building material. SOLUTION: The method for pretreating a lignocellulose comprises carrying out hydrolysis treatment of the lignocellulose-containing raw material at 140-220°C for 3-20 min in a diluted sulfuric acid, carrying out solid-liquid separation of the hydrolyzate into a primary sugar liquid and a solid material, adding 0.5-20 (expressed in terms of dried material) mass% slaked lime to the separated solid material, heating the mixture at 90-150°C for 10-120 min to carry out lime treatment, adding cellulase to the lime-treated reaction product to carry out hydrolysis treatment with the enzyme and obtaining a secondary sugar solution.
