The impact absorber (1) for vehicles has a first force absorption unit (5.1), at least one second force absorption unit (5.2) which can absorb an active force lying above a predetermined force value, and a sensor (2.2) for the detection of a force acting on the impact absorber. The sensor for detecting force acting on the impact absorber delivers an output signal (2.3) which is evaluated in a processor unit (3) which in dependence upon it creates a release criterion for an impact absorber protection system. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a device for the support of an outer skin section of a vehicle on its chassis (4), whereby the outer skin section is attached to the chassis by at least two of the aforesaid impact absorbers; and (B) a method for the creating of a release criterion for an impact protection system of a vehicle.
