<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive polarizing element that is superior in spatial separation and is also easy to manufacture. <P>SOLUTION: Prisms 11 are arrayed in parallel on a base film 10 so that they are irradiated through the base film with a light having polarizing components. These prisms 11 are made of optically anisotropic materials, and separate the p-polarized and s-polarized components of the incident light, by letting the p-polarized light pass through but reflecting the s-polarized light.
