PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce load when a medium is taken out, without using a pin clutch mechanism. SOLUTION: This medium carrying device comprises: a pair of carrying rollers 5 formed of a main roller 3 and an auxiliary roller 4 oppositely disposed on both sides of a medium carrying passage 2; a first drive shaft 6 rotatably supporting the main roller 3; a second drive shaft 7 rotatably supporting the auxiliary roller 4; a drive motor 8 driving at least the first drive shaft 6; and an encoder 9 detecting the rotation of the main roller 3. When the encoder 9 detects the rotation of the main roller 3 when the drive motor 8 is stopped in discharging the medium 10, the drive motor 8 is driven in the discharge direction of the medium 10.
