PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a skew sensor abnormality discriminating method which can be adopted for equipment having no tilt adjusting mechanism of a pickup and can be easily executed while recording and reproducing or the like are conducted. SOLUTION: A disk drive device has a pickup which conducts laser output for recording or reproducing to/from a disk, a light emitting part, a bisected light receiving part which receives light outputted from the light emitting part and reflected by a disk recording medium, and a skew sensor which outputs a signal to indicate tilt of the laser light axis of the pickup with respect to the disk as the output of the bisected light receiving part. By comparing the sum signal of the bisected light receiving part with a prescribed value, the skew sensor is determined to be abnormal when the sum signal is lower than a certain prescribed value.
