<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alumina-boron nitride (BN) composite and a method for producing the composite. <P>SOLUTION: This alumina-boron nitride composite is composed of Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>as a matrix phase, BN as a dispersing phase and a grain boundary phase comprising these phases and at least Y and O. This method for producing the high performance alumina-boron nitride composite is based on an in-situ reaction of aluminum borate and aluminum nitride, and comprises adding a specified amount of yttrium oxide as a sintering aid and subjecting the mixture to hot-pressing or normal pressure sintering. According to the present invention, the alumina-BN composite excellent in strength, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, hardly wettable to a molten metal, or the like, and having a texture in which very fine BN particles are dispersed in the alumina matrix is provided. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
