PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic wave shielding material optimum for use in the body of a motor car, the casing of an electronic instrument or the like. SOLUTION: The electromagnetic wave shielding material 10 is constituted of a carbon material 1 obtained by calcining a silk raw material at a temperature higher than 1,000°C and coated with a polymeric material 2. When the calcined fabric silk raw material is employed as the carbon material 1, contacting performance between carbon fibers is excellent and high electromagnetic wave shielding effect is shown. Further, the carbon material obtained by calcining the fabric silk raw material can be finished so as to be extremely thin and a constitution wherein one surface side or both surface sides of the carbon material are coated with the polymeric materials is employed whereby the material can be lightened and a necessary strength can be secured by selecting the thickness of the polymeric material.
