PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure the bare minimum ride quality performance and stable steering performance by generating predetermined damping force in the case of a trouble in a variable damping force damper. SOLUTION: Even in the case of a failure of a control means for controlling the damping force by applying an electric current to a coil 28 provided in a piston 22 to vary the viscosity of a magnetic viscous fluid in a fluid passage 22a, resulting in disabling the exciting control to the coil 28, a current supply circuit supplies a predetermined constant current to the coil 28 instead of the control means, whereby predetermined damping force is generated in the damper 14 to secure the bare minimum ride quality performance and stable steering performance. Further, a sub-coil 28' is disposed in the piston 22, whereby even in the case of supplying a predetermined constant current to the sub-coil 28' when the coil 28 breaks, the similar operational effect can be achieved.
