PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing fine particleα-alumina hardly causing necking of particles to each other obtained at a high ratio to convert to anα-type and exhibiting a large BET specific surface area. SOLUTION: This method for producing fine particleα-alumina comprises the steps of dispersing seed crystal particles, obtained by pulverizing unpulverized metal compound particles, and having a half-value width (H) of a main peak in a range 45°≤2θ≤70°in an X-ray diffraction spectrum which is≥1.06 times of a half-value width (H<SB>0</SB>) before pulverization, in an aqueous mixture containing an aluminum compound, removing water from the mixture to obtain a dry powder mixture, and firing the obtained dry powder mixture. Preferably the aluminum compound is an aluminum hydrolyzate. The aqueous mixture is obtained by adding a base to the aqueous solution in which an aluminum salt is dissolved and the seed crystal particles are dispersed at 60°C or lower so that hydrogen-ion concentration does not exceed pH 5 when the degree of pulverization of the seed crystal particles is≤1.15, and carrying out hydrolysis.
