PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for applying a tension on a steel wire, which applies a constant tension to the steel wire efficiently at a low cost and in a simple mechanism, and its apparatus. SOLUTION: The steel wire W is wound off from a spool 17, the wound-off steel wire W is pressed by an entry-side bracing 3 with the bias power of an adjusting spring, and the steel wire W passing through the entry-side bracing 3 is wound up once or more around a groove portion of a roll 2, which has a circular arc-like cross section, and is formed on the entire periphery of the center portion of the roll 2. The steel wire W passing through the roll 2 is passed through an exit-side bracing 4, by which the constant tension is given to the steel wire W. Thereafter, the steel wire W is installed to a driving device of a screen drum 16, and is wound around a filter cloth on an outer periphery of the screen drum 16 through a steel wire guide 18 freely movable in a rotary axial direction of the screen drum 16.
