<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gene expressed specifically in mesangial cells. <P>SOLUTION: The DNA expressed specifically in mesangial cells, the protein encoded by the DNA, the antibody binding to the protein, etc., are provided. These substances are indigenous to the mesangial cells and, therefore, useful in identifying the mesangial cells and detecting abnormalities in the mesangial cells. Moreover, the protein would be helpful for clarification of the functions of the mesangial cells and, in its turn, for clarification of the causes of diseases relating to the mesangial cells.
