PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress distribution of Fourier spectrum by an easy method without using a phase mask, to prevent deterioration in the SN ratio and to obtain high efficiency of diffraction. SOLUTION: Signal light is generated from data prepared by superposing pattern data on image data representing each pixel by a grayscale level in accordance with density, wherein the pattern data represents a pattern having a plurality of kinds of pixels with different grayscale levels two-dimensionally and alternately arranged in a large number in a predetermined direction and a direction that intersects the first direction. The generated signal light is subjected to Fourier transformation by a lens, and the transformed light and reference light are made to irradiate an optical recording medium, to record a hologram.
