PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a method for obtaining a mixture of 2-methyl-1,3-pentadiene and 4-methyl-1,3-pentadiene by dehydration reaction of 2-methylpentane-2,4-diol under the use of a polyglycol ether as heat transfer medium in the presence of an acid catalyst. SOLUTION: The method comprises the following process: An aqueous solution prepared by dissolving an acid salt of a mineral acid in water is introduced into a polyglycol ether comprising 80-100 wt.% of a polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether of the general formula:CH<SB>3</SB>(OCH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>OCH<SB>3</SB>( wherein, n is 2-8 ) and 0-20 wt.% of a polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether of th general formula:CH<SB>3</SB>(OCH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>OH( wherein, n is 2-8 ), wherein residues at 100 wt.% substantially comprising a higher-boiling component, and 2-methylpentane-2,4-diol is treated with the thus produced solution at high temperatures.
