The process involves observing a sample shaped unit of a tactile optical pushbutton (6) by a camera (7). Position of the sample shaped unit is measured together with an image processing system and evaluated with a coordinate of a coordinate measuring apparatus. An image of the sample shaped unit is recorded in a short exposure time that is synchronized with selection of the measuring unit system of the coordinate measuring apparatus. An independent claim is also included for a coordinate measuring device with a tactile optical pushbutton.
