PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for driving a plasma display panel (PDP) for preventing an abnormal discharge generated at the upper and lower edges of an effective display area of the PDP. SOLUTION: A pair of a sustain electrode and a scan electrode forms an independent discharge cell and scan electrodes are each disposed on the top side and on the lowest side of an effective display area instructed as a screen. Edges on sides adjacent to a scan drive part among both edges of the sustain electrodes positioned in an ineffective display area are separated to each other, the sustain electrodes are continuously disposed at least a certain part of a first substrate and the scan electrodes are continuously disposed at least a certain part thereof.
