PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape recording method for improving a deterioration in an error rate in the case of overwriting data to a magnetic tape, and to provide a linear tape system for realizing the recording method. SOLUTION: The magnetic tape recording method is provided for recording a data signal by a linear method on the magnetic tape having a magnetic layer which is deposited on a non-magnetic tape by oblique vapor deposition. The method is characterized in that an erase signal of a frequency higher than a recording signal frequency band is overwritten on the magnetic tape whereon a data signal is recorded thereby erasing the above data signal, thereafter a data signal is recorded anew.
