PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a safe flame retardant that provides high flame retardance even by addition of a very small amount, does not impair basic physical properties of a resin at all, has no adverse effect on the environment and the human body due to containing no halogen element and no phosphorus element and a flame-retardant resin composition containing the flame retardant. SOLUTION: The flame retardant comprises a polyhydric phenol compound, a saccharide compound and a fatty acid compound. Preferably the polyhydric phenol compound has a mode in which the compound is a tannin compound, the saccharide compound has a mode in which the compound is at least one of a monosaccharide, a disaccharide, an oligosaccharide and a polysaccharide and the fatty acid compound has a mode in which the compound is an organic carboxylic acid salt.
