A process for the preparation of vinyl polymers comprises an anionic polymerisation in which the metal of the cation counter to the carbon-anion of the propagation terminal is Mg/M1, where M1 = at least one alkali metal selected from Li, Na and K; molar concentrations of Mg and M1 satisfy the relationship of [Mg]/[M1] =4, at polymerisation temperature of 45-250 [deg]C and vinylic monomer concentration of 45-100 wt.% based on the solvent used in the reaction. Also claimed are: (i) polymerisation initiators for vinyl monomers containing (R2)2Mg, where R2 = hydrocarbyl; (R2)2Mg, R1M1 and/or R1OM1, where R1, R2 = hydrocarbyl, O = oxygen atom, M1 = at least one alkali metal chosen from Li, Na and K, with metal molar concentration satisfying the relationship of [Mg]/[M1] >= 4; (R2)2Mg, R1M1 and/or R1(OM1) with metal molar concentration satisfying the relationship of [Mg]/[M1] = 10-100; (R2)2Mg, R1M1, R3OH and/or (R3)2NH, where R1, R2, R3 = hydrocarbyl; N = nitrogen atom, with the relationship of [Mg]not less than[M1] and 2 X [Mg]+{M1] not less than [R3OH] not less than [(R3)2NH] being satisfied; and (R2)2Mg, R3OH and/or (R3)2NH with the relationship of 2 X [Mg]+{M1] not less than [R3OH] not less than [(R3)2NH] being satisfied; (ii) vinylic polymers made by the process; and (iii) styrene polymer prepared by the anionic polymerisation with molecular distribution Mw/Mn of 2-10, and a styrene resin composition with styrene monomer-derived trimer content being not > 250 ppm.
|
