<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for synchronizing a plurality of base stations in a cellular communication network. <P>SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for synchronizing base stations (30<SB>n</SB>) employing an independent synchronous source or identifying a base station (30<SB>n</SB>) as a master source. An RNC (C-RNC) (36, 38, 40) or a base station (30<SB>n</SB>) may designate one base station (30<SB>n</SB>) or UE (20, 22, 24) to acquire measurements derived from base stations (30<SB>n</SB>) to achieve synchronization.
