<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable measurement and detection of the presence or the absence of an object to be detected, and to enable a user to easily change the settings to a desired mode. <P>SOLUTION: The range sensor is provided, in advance, with a plurality of detection modes having different display/operation patterns on a displacement display section and is provided with a setting mode which selects one among the plurality of detection modes by a setting section and performs settings for each setting item, according to the selected detection mode and a display mode which displays the display values, in accordance with the set detection mode. The range sensor is also provided with a mode-switching section which can switch the display on the displacement display section between the display mode and the setting mode which performs selection of the detection mode and/or the settings of the detection mode.
