PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens which is high-variable, moreover, is compact and is provided with a simple constitution suitable for lens shutter camera etc. SOLUTION: The zoom lens has a first lens group of positive refractive power, a second lens group of negative refractive power, a third lens group of positive refractive power and a fourth lens group of negative refractive power in order from the object side to the image side, wherein, upon the zooming from wide angle end to telephoto end, each of the first lens group to the fourth lens group moves on the optical axis to the object side. Therein, each lens group is composed of at most two sheets of lenses, all surfaces constituting the first lens group, the second lens group and the third lens group are spherical and, when lateral magnifications of the fourth lens group at the wide angle end and the telephoto end areβ4W,β4T respectively and focal distances of the second lens group and the fourth lens group are f2, f4 respectively, the zoom lens satisfies the following condition; 2.4<β4T/β4W<4.0, 2.5
