PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of suppressing generation of knock. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine 1 scavenging residual gas remaining inside a combustion chamber A is provided with an intake valve timing mechanism 36e and exhaust valve timing mechanism 36f for adjusting opening/closing timing of an intake valve 36a communicating an intake passage 4 with the combustion chamber A and opening/closing timing of an exhaust valve 36b communicating the combustion chamber A with an exhaust passage 5 and forming an intake/exhaust valve full closing period in which both of the intake valve 36a and the exhaust valve 36b are closed from an exhaust stroke to an intake stroke of the internal combustion engine 1; and with a suction device 6 for sucking residual gas inside the combustion chamber A during the intake/exhaust valve full closing period. After the residual gas inside the combustion chamber A is sucked by the suction device 6, fuel is supplied from a fuel supply device 2 to the internal combustion engine 1.
