PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely scavenge the residual gas and control knocking even when there is an upper limit in the amount of supply of the gas for assisting scavenging. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine 10 has an air intake valve 8i and an exhaust valve 8e, and is provided with a high-pressure air tank 23 which generates scavenging auxiliary gas Ga used for assisting the scavenging of the residual gas Gb existing in a combustion chamber 1b. The pressure of the scavenging auxiliary gas Ga conveyed from the high-pressure air tank 23 is adjusted by a pressure-adjusting valve 22, and the scavenging auxiliary gas is injected from an injection valve 21. Then as the overlapping period between the air intake valve 8i and the exhaust valve 8e becomes longer, the pressure-adjusting valve 22 reduces the pressure of the scavenging auxiliary gas Ga.
