<p>A flexible mesh reinforcement, such as a net, encloses closely the contour of a floating container with a inlet at its upper end for the collection of a lightweight fluid, such as a hydrocarbon, from the surface of a stretch of water. The reinforcement is designed to restrict radial and axial deformation of the container, and has at its front end attachments for towing the container and for lifting it vertically out of the water when it is full. When a surface such as a port has to be cleaned economically, the container may be of a cheap, disposable material, and the bottom end of the reinforcement is arranged so that it can be opened quickly to dump the container for the destruction of its contents. Alterntively, the bottom of the container may be fitted with a valve through which the scavenged fluid may be drained.</p> |
