OPTICALLY ANISOTROPIC MEMBRANE, ITS MANUFACTURING METHOD, AND LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optically anisotropic membrane that contributes to an improvement in angle of visibility of a liquid crystal display.

SOLUTION: The optically anisotropic membrane is formed by using a composition containing a liquid crystalline compound on an orientation layer. The liquid crystal compound expresses a smectic phase, and the composition contains an additive promoting vertical orientation of the liquid crystal compound in an air interface or an additive promoting vertical orientation of the liquid crystal compound in an orientation layer interface. The liquid crystal compound is fixed in a state of vertical orientation.
